Essence of “SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WRITING”

Warm welcome!

I hope you are Fine. In Today’s write up I will be going to share you about fundamentals nuts and bolts of Scientific Research. I will try my level best to bring about conceptual clarity on the subject of “SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WRITING”. Please be with me till the end of this write up, Now Let’s Start !

“Research is Creating New Knowledge”

 -Neil Armstrong

(Americian Astronaut famed for being the first man to walk on the Moon)

There are many definitions of Research over internet but one that I consider best is,

According to western Sydney university website

“Research is defined as creation of new knowledge and /or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it leads to new and creative outcomes”.

For example, discovery of

  • Injection Insulin
  • Penicillin
  •  stem cell research
  • Bone marrow, renal and liver transplant and others

All the above Ground breaking research has revolutionized and transform the lives of many people across the globes.

In one line I would say that it is collection, analysis, presentation of data and drawing meaningful conclusion with great efforts and hard work.

Publicizing your research findings in International Reputed Journal adds credibility and authenticity of your Research findings.

Basically Scientific writings differs from fiction or non scientific writing and one has to follow the set of format and pattern.

Sir Austin Bradford Hill, A statistician to British Medical Research Council in 1930 suggested the following four questions an Investigator and Researcher should Answer:

  • Why did you Start Research?
    • What did you do?
    • What was your findings?
    • What does it all mean?

The above questions corresponds to  one definite  and systemic way of conducting and proceeding to research which is known by famous ACRONYM

Do you know about that ACRONYM ?

Any Wild Guess ?

Of course  you are very near to answer..!

You may be Right ..?

And i.e.

“IMRAD”  FASHION which is accepted by most of the International scientific journals.

Now let me tell you about this systemic style of research presentation. In this

I stands for  INTRODUCTION

(It provides background information, purpose of research, aims to Introduce to specific topic and stimulate the readers interest )

M stands for METHODS

(It describes the logical sequence in which study  is carried out and how the data was analysed)

R stands for RESULTS

This section state what has been found in scientific research and it is presented in the form of text, tables, figures and charts as follows for e.g.

  • Line diagram
  • Bar chart,
  • Pie chart
  • Histogram
  • Scattered diagram,

AND

D Stands for DISCUSSION and CONCLUSION

“If the reader is to grasp what the writer means, the writer must understand what the reader needs”

George D.Gopen and Judith A Swan

It the drawing the meaningful conclusions, oponions and recommendations from the research or we can say that  it is the

 “Essence of your Research findings”

  • It is the take home message for the reader.
  • If possible strength, weakness and limitation of present study should also be highlighted.

So, this is all about IMRAD fashion.

  • Now let us switch over to some of fundamentals and concepts of Presenting your valuable findings…!

I think you got my point.!

              Perhaps you are Right !

  • Now I am talking about Research writing and it is much more interesting and fascinating as investigating the research. Let’s move ahead.
  • Wonderful journey of writing your research story (Thesis,Dissertion, project or manuscript submission) begins  as soon as the idea of conducting the research has born and evolved  into your mind..(You may also like Golden Rules for writing the blog post. )
    • Basically, it begins by selection of Title, Introduction. Abstract, Keywords, References and etc.

“Truthfully, many people will not read much else. Unless, the title and abstract can “Grab” the reader ,they all unlikely to read on.”

  • Title is the first and last impression of submitted thesis, manuscript or scientific paper which is to be carefully seen, analysed and observed by reader, editor and the reviewers although sound Methodology

 (“Content is the king”.)

  • Good and Attractive title conveys the essence of the study.
    • key words, abstract and reference are also important element of Scientific research paper.

Now following is protocol for writing and conducting the research it begins with

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE – State the hypothesis being evaluated in one or two lines.

MATERIALS AND METHOS-Briefly state about types of study being conducted, sampling, population and different measurement being used. For e.g. state whether it is a simple descriptive study ,cross sectional ,case-control or cohort  study ,randomized or non randomizesd control trials.

RESULTS- It should investigate and bring about important and key findings of the Research. It should be matched with Aims and objectives of  study ,one must look and check whether it support or refute the Null hypothesis.

It should also present various stastical test like Z ,t,chi-square,logic regression to support or refute the Null hypothesis with level of  significance (P value).

CONCLUSION- Summarize in one or two lines the conclusion made on the basis of the findings.

RECOMMENDATIONThese are positive suggestion and outcomes derived on basis of research and to be recommended and advised to policy makers or beneficiary.

So  coming back to point scientific writing is first stepping stone in professional career of Young Research Scientist. The journey  begins  as soon as researchers thinks about planning and Execution of Research study/Project/Dissertation or thesis.

Good quality Scientific Research writings has following eye catching components

1.Novelty of Research questions or subjects or what  I mean to say that its should be INNOVATIVE TOPIC

2.Clarity

3.Sound Presentation style with Good and meaningful message (You may also like An Art of an effective presentation.)

Now we are on closing session of this write up and I would say that Research should be free from Plagiarism. It is unintentional copying without acknowledgement and it can occur at any stage of planning, research, writing or publication. You should check for it before submission of your work in any state, national and international journal or Foreign University. There is various software available in market like Dupli checker, google viper etc.(You may also like 5 Plagiarism Checkers for Medical and Scientific Articles)

Your work should be plagiarism free and it adds credibility and Genuineness to your Research work.

So, this is all about “Scientific Research writing”. I hope you have gained some clarity on subject.
